Residents of Slovenia are liable to personal income tax on their worldwide income. The status of a resident of Slovenia is, as a rule, valid for those who have registered permanent residence in Slovenia.
Non-residents are liable to pay personal income tax on income the source of which is in Slovenia.
Determination of the residency status – Entering the Republic of Slovenia (available only in Slovenian language): Questionnaire
- Acquiring the tax residence status
For the formal arrangement of the residency status in Slovenia (entry of the adequate residency status into tax registry) an individual needs to submit an application for determination of the residency status with all the necessary evidence with the financial office.
- Procedure for acquiring tax number for natural persons without permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia
To gain a tax number, a foreign natural person should submit the DR-02 form to any financial office. Foreigners that are employed in Slovenia can submit a request for employment history proof and for the implementation of other rights with the Zavod za pokojninsko in invalidsko zavarovanje (Pension and Disability Insurance Institute of Slovenia).
Contributions for pension and invalidity insurance are also paid with student work which means information of pension qualifying period can also be obtained for students.
All foreigners that had performed student work in the Republic of Slovenia can submit a request for the statement of the insurance length for insurance holders from the 18th article which is established in the current year for the previous year.
The most common applications, regulated by the Pension and Disability Insurance Institute that are submitted by the foreigners employed in Slovenia:
- Application for establishing the employment history from abroad
- Preliminary written information on the completed pension qualifying period (the recommended form replacing the above - this process can take from 1 month to up to 6 months!) It is recommended that in addition to the completed form, the following should also be submitted together with the application:
- list of employers (companies where the individual was employed);
- from when until when was the individual employed;
- insurance number;
- personal number (Bosnia and Herzegovina);
- OIB (Croatia) – a special number that joins tax number and personal identification number (EMŠO);
- personal number (Serbia)
- Application for the statement of the insurance periods in the Republic of Slovenia (you can claim the document in person and you can receive it instantly!)
- Invalidity pension (it is essential that you first contact your personal doctor who will explain the possibilities for obtaining the invalidity pension)
- Family and bereavement allowance
IMPORTANT!
Russia and Ukraine do not have any agreements with the Republic of Slovenia, and consequently, as a foreigner, you cannot claim any rights from the pension or invalidity insurance in the Republic of Slovenia.
For foreigners from Ukraine, only the employment relationship concluded in the Republic of Slovenia is counted.
